Today saw 3rd Division Beaumont Wanderers visit us in the Charlie Turnbull Trophy. You would like to think that this was going to be a formality for CFC, Having weathered the storm in recent games, we have showed that we are more than 2 dimensional; we have proved that whilst playing poorly, we still can grind results out. Not our favoured way of doing things and certainly not the prettiest but none the less we have been graced with some fortune on all fronts.
Today saw lady luck pack her bag and firmly turn her back on us, as our performance was over all, poor. The weather conditions didnt bode us well as I think most of us would have liked to have seen the game postponed. The weather was ice cold, with a layer of wet drizzly snow that was always going to interfere with the game. Our bodies were already cold and our minds were certainly elsewhere, hidden in the warmths of our beds.
A few personnel issues saw players not turning up for the game turning an already reluctant team into a desperate one with no goalkeeper and no substitutes.
The game started, the pitch cutting up quickly as the sleet slowly thawed into the ground. The ball was difficult to move around and touch was difficult to adjust as the icy ground now became a wet blanket around your boots. Both teams didnt really want to be there and as such the football reflected that..... What little football was tried to be played was seriously hampered by the weather and the serious lack of interest.
Shalford had a few good breaks, Frosty using his freedom down the right hand side to deliver some decent crosses but coming to nothing. The ball continually got caught in the snow areas of the pitch and caused a few dramas with passes being intercepted which would never have been an issue on a normal day. Wanderers were keen to impress and produced some good movement that tested stand in keeper Bensley which warmed his hands slightly. Over all a poor 1st half came to an end goalless and eventless.
Half Time: CFC Shalford 0 Beaumont Wanderers 0
The 2nd half was as poor as the 1st, lack of movement caused issues with passing which in turn caused issues in being caught out of position which in turn caused issues in covering, tackling and really just caring!!....... The list goes on.
Wanderers were awarded mid way through the 2nd half. A near post delivery wasnt cleared properly, giving them a couple of opportunities to score, eventually crashing the ball into the net from close range. This sprung CFC into life for a while but with a real lethargic aura around the team it was slowly heading back to the poor display of football that Shalford seemed to be
slipping into. Spurts of passing fluctuated through the team every now and again but Wanderers seemed to want the game more and restricted any attempts of a Shalford come back to minimum.
Wanderers compounded the misery by counter attacking a CFC move and having only the keeper to beat miss hit the ball causing Bensley do dive the other way and see the visitors win the game convincingly 0 v 2.
Full Time: CFC Shalford 0 Beaumont Wanderers 2
A thoroughly miserable game of football, seriously lacking in desire to want to play football let alone win!!!!!
Hopefully this is our wake up call. We have had the signs and they have been written on the wall for the last couple of weeks. This surely should kick us up the arse and at least make us look at ourselves and see we arent good enough to continually play poor and get away with it.
Our day will come gentlemen but we need to show that we deserve it first!!!!!!!
